Where to Find the Serial Number on Your Watch

The serial number is the most important detail about a watch. It is how dealers, jewellers, insurers and the police identify it, and it is what you need to check a watch with us or register it if it is lost or stolen. Here is where to find it on the most popular brands.

Serial number or model number?

Most watches carry two numbers. The model (reference) number tells you what kind of watch it is, and thousands of watches share it. The serial number is unique to your watch. When you check or register a watch, it is the serial number we need. If you’re not sure which is which, send us both.

Where to find it, brand by brand

Rolex

On Rolex watches made since the late 2000s, the serial number is engraved on the inner ring around the dial (the rehaut), at the 6 o’clock position. On older models it is engraved on the side of the case between the lugs at 6 o’clock, hidden by the bracelet. It is also printed on the warranty card.

Omega

Usually engraved on the back of one of the lugs or on the caseback. It is also shown on the warranty card.

Cartier

Engraved on the caseback, usually next to the model number.

Patek Philippe

The case and movement numbers are engraved inside the watch, so the caseback has to be opened to see them. Use the Certificate of Origin or the Extract from the Archives, or ask a qualified watchmaker to open it for you.

Audemars Piguet

Engraved on the caseback, and shown on the certificate.

Breitling

Engraved on the caseback, usually near the model number.

TAG Heuer

Engraved on the caseback as a short code of letters and numbers, separate from the model number.

Other brands

Look on the caseback first, then between the lugs. The warranty card, certificate, original receipt or insurance documents will usually show it too.

Tips

  • Never open a caseback yourself: you could damage the watch or its water resistance.
  • Write the serial number down and keep a clear photo of it, along with your papers, somewhere safe.
  • If the serial number has been scratched or polished off, be very careful: that is a warning sign.
